These vivacious perennials pop out of shaded garden areas with their vivid contrast and distinctive veining. The beautiful heart shaped caladium leaves have colorful red, pink or white centers and green to deep green edges. The plant does produce subtle white blooms that pale in contrast to the spectacular leaves. Use the fast growing caladium to create attractive borders or foundation plantings in shady areas. Mass plantings will transform the dull appearance of continually shady areas. Mix with other shade loving plants, such as hostas or ferns, and consider using in container plantings. These may even be added to houseplant collections.
Plants typically grow as tall as 24 inches and up to 24 inches across. Mix with dwarf varieties to create a tiered effect with the grouping.
Start caladium bulbs inside and transplant in spring after the ground is thoroughly warm. Select a neutral, well-drained soil in a full shade to partial shade area of the garden. Sun exposure may affect the variegated patterns in the leaves. In colder climates remove the bulbs in winter and store in a dry, frost-free area. Frequently strip off the flowers to concentrate the plant's energy on leaf development.
All or parts of the caladium plant may be poisonous. Avoid ingestion of this plant by children or pets. Contact with sap may irritate skin.
