Description:

Despite the name, Daylilies are biologically distinct from true lilies. Daylilies are known to bloom for a single day or, in some cases, a single night. The flowers of most species open at sunrise and wither at sunset, to be replaced by another one on the same stem the next day. Because individual flowers are short-lived, they do not make good cut flowers for formal flower arranging.

Daylily breeding has been a specialty above all in the United States, where the heat- and drought-resistant qualities of the plant have made them garden standbys for over 50 years. The adaptable, hearty plant can thrive in all but the most extreme climates in the country. They come in many colors, including white, red, yellow, and orange.

Plant daylilies in full sun and well-drained soil. The plant benefits from an application of fertilizing material. They should be sown approximately 12 inches apart. Mulch around the plant, but don't cover it completely. Until the plant is established, it requires frequent watering
