The foxtail lily is a perennial bulb that is planted 6 inches deep and at least a foot apart. The plant prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, but is tolerant to most soils as long as there is good drainage. Adding compost to the soil is recommended. Foxtail lilies usually grow to 36 inches, but some varieties will grow beyond that. In areas with windy conditions, taller plants may need to be staked.
Covering the bulb area with grass clippings and leaves in the fall will help protect the bulbs during the winter. As with most bulbs, after years in the same location, bulbs multiply and plants become crowded. It is advisable to separate bulbs in the fall, every 3-5 years. The foxtail lily is frost hardy; use a light mulch to protect new growth. Slugs and snails can interfere with new growth. Avoid over-watering.
