| Description: |
Star shaped, and in most species, flat on the ground. The leaves may be flushed with red or variously lined with other colors. |
| Environment: |
Suitable for the home or a greenhouse |
| Lighting Needs: |
Does best in bright indirect sunlight coming from the East/West |
| Soil Type: |
Use a GOOD rich potting soil (a soil that retains water yet drains well), such as an African violet mix. If you want to mix your own the plant will be very happy in just peat or a combination of peat and humus (leaf mold). Always re-pot new plants to ensure the quality of the soil.
Always use a pot with a hole.
|
| Watering: |
Drench the soil and let it become moderately dry between waterings. Use warm water. |
| Fertilizer: |
Feed every two weeks in the spring and summer, with a water soluble, lime free fertilizer diluted by half. This can also be absorbed through the leaves, so it may be applied when misting. |
| Plant Pests: |
Prone to scale. Always inspect any new plant for pests before introducing it to your home or greenhouse. |
| Propagation: |
Offsets with roots attached
in the early spring.
Using a sharp knife remove the offset with roots from the mother plant. Pot it in its regular mix.
|
| Gardening Tips & Care: |
Cut off the flower stem after it dies and make sure the plant has good ventilation. Place pebbles or gravel in the drainage dish to hold water and increase the humidity, make sure the pot is sitting on the gravel and not in the water.
