Description:

The beautiful Oleander (Nerium Oleander), is an evergreen that can be trained to become either a large shrub or a small tree (between eight and 20 feet tall). In the United States, it is most hardy in Florida and southern California. Its flowers can be pink, white, red, or purple from May till October, and under ideal conditions it may blossom all year round. The flowers of the N. odorum variety are also noted for their fragrance. The Rosebay variety is a popular avenue ornamental in the southern states because of its ability to withstand dry, dusty traffic conditions. It grows fast and can be pruned to fit shrubbery or tree proportions.

Oleanders prefer sandy soil and bloom profusely if the soil is enriched with manure or organic fertilizers. They propagate by layering, and cuttings sprout roots rapidly when placed in a container of water. The plants need full sun exposure. In regions where it is not hardy, it can be grown as an attractive potted plant for the house. It may be placed outdoors in the summer and returned inside to rest during the winter. A cool location and only occasional watering work best during the rest period. Oleanders are very poisonous, so caution must be taken to protect children and animals.
