Description:

Peas are commonly thought of as vegetables, but botanically a pea is a fruit. Peas are annual plants that enjoy cool weather and are frost-hardy. They grow in partial shade to full sun. Some varieties are heat-tolerant and can be planted in mid- to late summer. A crop can reach maturity in two months. Seedlings are easily damaged by improper cultivation and fertilization.

Wrinkle-seeded garden peas are sweet and popular for table use. Snap peas have low-fiber pods that are easily snapped and eaten. Snow peas are harvested before the peas develop in the tender pods. Early plantings usually produce the largest yields. Peas can be planted anytime after soil reaches 45 degrees.

Peas are loaded with nutrients: eight vitamins and seven minerals. These nutrients maintain good bone health and promote cardiovascular wellness. Peas are a good source of energy with vitamins and minerals that fight fatigue, protect energy-producing cells, support functions of the immune system, and supply the body antioxidants.
