I live in Florida and planted a gardenia in a large pot. It's growing fine, but I now noticed a white sticky substance on the stems. Not on the leaves, just on the stems. Is this some type of fungis? If so, how do I get rid of it?

How do you get rid of mealy bugs, if that's what is on the gardenia plant. I see white stuff and the leaves have a sticky feel although I have all new growth over the plant, I took it in for the winter and repotted it a month ago and it seems okay except for the white stuff (which at first I thought was new flowers starting). I mist it and water it regularly but I don't know how else to care for it since this is my first gardenia plant.
