I have had a corn plant in my house for about 20 years by the front door with low light and winter drafts. It never had woody stems, but now they are really flimsy. I wasn't sure what it needed, but thought it might be potbound, so I replanted it. I also took it outside in the shade (until 7:00P.m. when it gets sun). Is there a corn plant variety that doesn't have woody stems? Am I just overwatering it or am I doing something else wrong? Will it survive outside? Should I cut it back? I am at a loss.

hello, Ive had my cornplant by the frontdoor for 18 years...its best doing winter when the plant is in a dorment state to move it to an opposite corner if you have one , as cold drafts are not good for any plants....outside in the shade wont hurt it as long as the tempurture doesnt drop below 55 degrees..when you transplated you did put draingage rocks at the bottom yes..to allow water runoff...how tall is your plant, my cornplant which blooms is about 9 feet tall now...and its been in the same pot for the past few years...let it dry out before watering....with low light and humidity, its not drinking as much....you might want to think about bouying a plant light about 24 inches long, say at walmart and put it above your plant on a timer...it will really make a dfference at low cost, and you should see an improvement in about a month...also if you move it, be sure to leave it in one spot as much as possible,,,moving it around will cause it to readapt to a newer inviorment....any more questions concering your cornplant just email me......
