Amy,when I taught school, we planted an avacado seed in a pot --after we had sprouted it by hanging the seed with toothpicks , largest side down into the water ( sort of suspended fashion). We placed it on the South side or East side of the classroom ,depending on the location of my classroom, to get the correct exposure. We used a scewer as you use for shis-ka-bobs to stick into the soil around the edge of the pot to check for wetness. When the scewer came out dry, we watered it with bottled spring water--not to drown it-- but just enough to give it a drink, usually about once a week. Then when school was out, I took it home and placed the pot on my porch, out of direct sun. It makes a nice tree-type plant but you probably won't get any avacados from it (so the nursery man told me.). I never did.
