I have a several plants in my house and for the past couple of years I have struggled with a gnat like fly. I believe it lives of the fungus in the dirt. I have tried every kind of plant spray and nothing kills them they really don’t hurt my plants at all they are just very irritating. I did go to a nursery and they suggested layering all my plants with about 2 inches of sand. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you,

I personally haven't used the sand method but I have heard using bark nuggets, and I just use household bug spray. Spray the soil and underneath side of the plant. Also, soil knats come from to wet soil. Reduce your watering if possible and use the spray.

I was troubled with these little knats. I was going crazy. In my web search I was told that they come from larvae left in the soil....new or old...when it is kept moist, it grows....to kill it let soil dry completely....this has worked for me....badly infected plants I got rid of....although, if you were infected, it doesn't mean that larvae wasn't left in all the other soil of other plants......This started with a NEW MOIST bag of potting soil...I put it in all my plants...the African Violet "self watering" pots were the worst because of the infected soil. I used hair spray to kill knats - (you must kill what you have flying around). The hair spray sticks wings together and they die next got rid of the badly infected plants. I was told to use numerous sprays, but since these little flies were so annoying and everything took so long - it had to end.
