The guzmania will like bright light inside the house (although it will probably flower for you wherever you have it. Keep a littl water in the cup, and let a little overflow into the soil. The roots are not very important. Do you know that when the flower is finished, the whole plant will die slowly, and new ones will come from the base? So, don't worry that you are doing something wring wghen it slowly goes downhill.
The spider plant is something else. Could the pot have failed to drain, so that the soil got waterlogged. This lets disease come in, and when this rot starts, it goes very quickly. Derek

Hello:
I have a Guzmania Rana for years, but it is small, didn't flower any more and does not grow at all, does not give any new leaves. What is wrong with that.

Thanks
S.
