I have an aloe vera plant that I would like to break off a leaf and replant it. What process do I need to follow in order for it to grow?

My aunt has TONS of aloe plants and all she does is split it at the root and plant it in dirt! Grows like crazy unless you over water. You can do this any day of the year.
Good Luck,
Kim

I have aloe and have had them for many years.

I have never heard of planting a leaf from aloe. The purpose of the plant is to break its leaves off and use it for antibiotic purposes.

The only way to start a new aloe is to take babies from the parent plant once they have sprouted up the soil from the parent plants root system. Thats how I have done it.

Best of Luck!

All I did was take an offset from the base of the plant, dip it in some rooting hormone, and plant it. I think that 'from the base of the plant' is key on aloe...and I believe that's the gist of what Kim was referring to about her aunt and all the aloe vera she's growing.

Kim,

Yes, you can propagate an Aloe vera from a leaf cutting. Allow the cutting to heal over in the open air for about 24 hours. Then insert the cut end about a half-inch deep into a gritty potting mix of equal parts of peat moss and Perlite. Keep this mix moderately damp at all times. Sometimes a light misting each day is enough to maintain this moisture. Warm temps will help roots develop. Use a very small pot so the roots will fill it up more quickly and start putting out new leaves and offsets (baby plants).

Email me if you have any questions.
