I have several pits in water (10 or 12) but only one of them is sprouting any roots. They have been in there from 3 to 4 weeks. How long should I wait before I toss them? How many pits don't ever do anything? Please help.

They can take a while in water, patience is the key. Some take longer than others. It depends on the maturity of the seed. It really doesn't matter whether the skin is still on the seed or not while it's in the water. Just keep an eye on the water level making sure it's covering the pit at all times. Spring is around the corner so it shouldn't be too long now. I would say about three months or so in water..could be less depending on the environmental conditions. Some root faster than others. But they do root..I left one in water for a good six months and still nothing..just when I was about to throw it away..it cracked, the roots started coming..and fast..

Patience...it's worth the wait..

Good luck..

My avacaco pit took 3 months in water. They roots did come quickly once they started. I was just about ready to trash them when they appeared. However I may have been to quick to pot them in soil because now I do not see any more growth. Purhaps the steam and leaves will take another 3 months? Do you think - Does any one know about the pits after they are planted with roots?

Well here is how I have grown my avocado plant from seed. Her name is Tammy and she is three years old and growing strong.

First and foremost you have to look for an avocado that is mature and ready to eat. After eating it. I wash the seed with warm water and I leave the coat on. For me, rooting in water is fun because you get to see the action, although it does make you get impatient.

I fill a glass with water, I use four toothpicks and insert them all around the seed until it looks like a pin wheel, then I place it on top of the glass. The pointed side of the avocado seed is on top while the flat portion is in the water. I then place it in front of a window, so that way it is always receiving light, then it's time for the waiting game.. this can take a while however, it's totally worth the wait if you ask me.

Once the seed matures, it will crack from the bottom and work it's way up. I cannot stress this enough..Leave it alone while this happens..I once picked up the glass to take a look at how my avocado was doing while it was at this stage after waiting a long time and it slipped out of my hands, the avocado seed fell on the floor and split open. I had to start all over again..

The roots will then follow, and they will fill up the glass, then a stem will shoot out from on top. Let the stem grow about six to seven inches tall, then cut it back down to three inches. The stem will branch out and it will leaf out again. This is so it doesn't grow leggy and just one stem, you want to have it branch out so that way it looks nice as it grows.

When the roots are "thick" and the stem leafs out again after you cut it. It's now time to plant it. Terra cotta clay pots work best because if it's kept to moist (which plastic pots hold in moisture) the leaves will turn yellow.

Once you have your plant, it will grow fast:) Keep it out of drafts during the winter, they will die in the cold.. They like bright but indirect light. A shady area is good for it. Let it dry somewhat between waterings.

When the stem grows to about 12 inches tall, cut it back down again to about six inches. This will force it to give out another branch:) Keep pruning it like this and you will have a nice bushy plant:)

Good luck:)
