My roommate has an unidentified plant that she got at IKEA. It has green spiky leaves which are about an inch and a half wide and 2-5 inches long coming out of a circular base. The leaves are thin and a bit papery. It has had one flower, a red, flat (like it's been pressed) flower on a long, red stem coming out of the middle of the foliage, growing straight up. This flower is now fading and we'd like to know what to do with the plant! Thank you!!

I think it is possibly a vriesea. Member of the bromeliad family. You could cut off the spike if you want to or leave it on till it becomes unsightly.

Anyway, the plant will now start to slowly die, dont worry this is normal. While it dies it will produce new plants at its base. You could seperate the new plants and pot them up for new plants or keep them on for a clump.
