I need to know how to continue taking care of a poinsetta now that the holidays are over to keep it alive.

Dear Karla...just keep it in a sunny window and water when dry...when spring arrives and it is warm enough to stay outside, if you have a porch or covered area, that would be perfect, put it there for the summer and cut it back or prune it shorter at this time..you may still have red bloom (leaves) left, but cutting back at this time enables you to get it in shape again. I have never had luck bring one back to the blooming state again, even in sunny windows when I bring it back in for Fall...usually end up getting new ones around the holidays for color...the old plant just seems to stay green and occasionally give out a wimpy bloom which is not satifactory. I've heard to get them to bloom in the fall put them in the closet for several days ( the dark makes it bloom) i've never done this, its my first time trying to keep it alive.

Hey there, I have a Red Pointsetta my grandmother gave me, which she's had for a few years. She told me to do this: 14 hours in pure dark, rest of the hours in pure sun in a window each day. Green leaves (flowers) will turn red. It has turned red before for each time for her. Let's see if I get it right too, hehe. Hope this helps!
