Just discovered that most of my indoor house plants have those common pests! I love plants and never knew much about insects, figured if I watered them they would be fine. I was wrong, now I am battling scale, aphids, spider mites! I have cleaned all of their leaves, gave them a systemic treatment and have been misting them. I don't turn the heater on, only in the very very cold months, and it is not humid in here at all. So I've turned on the heat for them and will boil a pot of water every other day to put some moisture in the air. Some of the plants also started developing leaf diseases which I am guessing is from not the right humidity and temp. How long should I wait> Will the systemic treatment work for sure? Should I discard the plant if it doesn't start coming back to life? I have moved them so they do not touch each other and spread things. I have moved them closer to the windows for I live in an apartment and it is not to light. Hope they will start to flourish, have come to realize plants are not just plants. They are like pets, they have to be cared for, washed, not just watered. This is my first time trying on the green thumb. Any suggestions for a beginner?

I think that you are on the right track (although I tend to stay away from sytemics as a few of them are quite nasty. Anything that you found in the store would probably be all right, but if the air starts to get a 'chemical' smell, let a breeze blow though.)
Soap and water and a little spray bottle like the ones that various household things come in, is a very useful combination. You can sray a whole plant in a fairly short tme and kill anything that the solution touches. Not a perfect kill as a rule, but it makes you feel that you are doing something (Soap rules!) The plants also seem to feel the change of seasons, even in the house, and things should start to look better as spring develops outside. Derek
