I have a problem with these tiny flies on a couple of my house plants. They seem to like to go down in the potting soil and when you disturb them they scatter. They have a dark body and there wings look large in comparison to there body. Do you have any suggestions to my delema?
Thanks Harry

Go to SEARCH, this site, type in "Fungus Gnats" to get some information on what you can do.

I had these little pesty gnats too. I was told that when you buy potting soil, if moist, there could be larve in the dirt. (perhaps caused by a fungus in the moist soil) Make sure the soil is completely dry before potting - open bag to dry out. I had just bought two african violets and repoted them in self watering pots. Since these little creatures grown in moist surroundings, and were already growing in the soil, they were multiplying like crazy. I was besides myself. Than I figured how nice it would be to refresh ALL my plants. A NIGHTMARE. After searching on the web I came across someone who told me to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. (hence killing any new larve). The African Violets had to go.. but it took awhile & I saved my beautiful 25+ houseplants. Also, try to isolate the infected plant in a corner. It may sound silly, but hairspray is the best way to get rid of any flies. Sticks to their wings and they can't fly. I wouldn't spray it directly on the plant, unless I was totally desperate......and I was.....good luck

We Have white Fungi looking things killing our leaves. On our Golden Pothos, have been spraying insect killer and mold stopper. But nothing seems to work. We have had this kind of house plant or over 10 years and never had this problem before. Hate throw away this plant but dont know what else to do.
