Recently bought a "lucky bamboo" in a small pottery type dish. The plant looks something like asparagus stalks...tied together with only water in the dish. I tried to match what it looks like with all the "bamboos" listings on this site, to no avail. Am wondering what care is needed for this plant...water only? Any help...response...is appreciated.

"Lucky Bamboo" is not really a bamboo at all, that's just the name it was given. It's really a Dracaena (Dracaena sanderiana)They can grow in water for a long time, just change the water every week so it's stays clean. Potting them up in soil, they plants can take on a different look than they look now. Give it bright indirect light, no direct sun, it will burn the leaves.

The "lucky bamboo" plant my husband has is about 2-3 years old. I gave it to him in a "chinese soup"bowl, filled with gravel pebbles (the kind you get for fish tanks). He has it on his desk in a west window that gets the strong afternoon sun, but he keeps the blinds slightly closed. It actually gets mostly indirect light. He fills a plastic cup with tap water and lets it stand and once a day or everyother day, whenever the mood strikes he makes sure that the bowl is full of water. It is basically a very shallow bowl. I asked a lady from Vietnam about its care and she told me NEVER fertilize it, JUST WATER! and don't let it dry out. I can attest to the drying out--killed three that I had! But, I was concerned because it is growing so tall-about 21/2ft-3 ft and I would really love to cut it down and perhaps make other plants from the stalk. But, we are having a disagreement--he says-if its not broken, don't fix it. But I am sure that one of these days, it will topple over. I really want to know if you can cut off the top, and perhaps have it sprout branches. Hope this helps who ever needs some support.

Mine is in a vase with a fish and it is doing great. I have had it and the fish over a year now. I feed the fish occasionally but I keep the water in good condition. It is beautiful

MY LUCKY BAMBOO IS IN A SMALL CERMAMIC BOWL WITH ROCKS, IT WAS GIVEN TO ME AT CHRISTMAS. THEY TOLD ME TO JUST KEEP WATER IN IT AT ALL TIMES, IT IS QUITE SHALLOW. HOWEVER, I LIVE IN THE SIZZLING HEAT OF PHOENIX, AZ.. AND BEFORE IT GOT SO HOT THE PLAT WAS FINE, NOW THE TIPS OF THE LEAVES ARE TURNING YELLOW IN COLOR. DO YOU THINK IT IS TOO HOT, IT DOES GET SOME SUN, NOT DIRECTLY, BUT THROUGH SHUTTERS. WHAT CAN I DO? THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE.

I was wondering the same thing as Emma. I want to cut my bamboo plant as well, but I am not sure if any leaves will sprout from the detached part......Any suggestions?
Also, I want to ask Susan, or anyone who knows, what look does the bamboo plant takes on if it is fertilized?

I have a question,is it okay if you just spray the plant with water? Or do you have to pour water into the vase. I recently aquired 3 "lucky bamboo" plants (0ne for me, one for my sister, one for my brother) and they are in pebbles. I'm not sure, and I don't want to kill the plants after only having it for only a few days.
