Help! Help! Help! My Mother-in-law died two months ago. We received alot of house plants. One in particular, we callthem Peace Lilly in GA! They are dying! The leaves are gold and brown! I have done everything from sitting them on the deck soaring them down in water to feeding them Miracle Grow plant sticks. Please help me save them. They look bad! I'm embarrassed for people to come in and see them. I have twelve (12). Immediately response(s). Thank you for your help.

Peace lilies are pretty easy plants to take care of just by doing a few simple things.
The light they should be placed in is bright, but defused, or indirect, no direct sun. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two has dried, so, in other words, the soil should be semi moist underneath the top, not soggy wet and not all dry. Check once a week with your finger and water accordingly. You might want to check the roots for rot.
Take the fertilizer sticks out! Fertilizers only works well on healthy plants, it's not a cure for ailing ones, they can make things worse, and the "sticks" because they take a while to break down, can cause the roots to burn. Healthy plants should only get small amounts of "diluted fertilizer" now and then or when an sick plant is throwing out lots of new growth.
Keep the plants in small pots (an inch bigger around than the roots) for best results.
Peace lilies will also grow in just plain water.

I have 2 peace lilies that I have had for 5+ years. They are easy to care for and easy to revive if they get "sick". Like Susan said, ONLY water when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Water until it starts to drain out of the bottom. Do not let the plant sit in the drained water for more than an hour or so; discard the drained water. Use this method of watering for all your plants (except succulents). Don't put them in too big of a pot (no more than 1-2 inches bigger round than the root-ball). And No direct sunlight! Some people keep their's outside , but I have had better luck indoors. I rarely fertilize and I water with distilled water. Distilled will help prevent brown leaf tips. Never fertilize a plant that has just been repotted. It sounds like the plants have been through a lot....feeding, being put outside then back inside, soaked with water, etc. That will "stress" a plant and they will appear "sick". If I were you I would leave them inside, or outside in shade, take the sticks out (and leave them out), trim off dying leaves, and then just leave them alone unless they need watering. I have a very informative Peace Lily Care Sheet that I will send you. Email me at c-leigh1@msn.com
