hello I just started to expend my collection of plants at home and have noticed that more and more of my plants or should I say the plant's soil grows "mold" ( it looks like white moldy stuff) I am not sure why I water my plants once a week , the soil is usually dry by the time I have to water them again, use fertilizer every three weeks , and the mold keeps on growing I do not know what to do , I have looked through a few books but did not find an answer
I need help thanks

Mold can be caused be either over-watering, poor drainage or the the plants are over-potted. (pots too big)Plants do better in pots that are only an inch bigger around than the plants root-ball. All will keep the soil wet.Even if the top feels somewhat dry, down underneath could still be still wet.
Most plants like to get close to dry, or dry out between waterings. Sometimes even after a week, you might find that they can still go another another week longer, if not more. Others like semi moist conditions. It all depends on the plant. You can take out the top inch or two of soil trying to get all the mold spores and add new well draining soil, water less and give better air circulation around them.
Over-fertilizing can cause a white film to appear on the soil. Avoid feeding in the colder months.
