for my daughters funeral i recieved a very nice house plant from her doctor but it didnt have any directions on its care. its in a really nice clay pot and i water it regularly but its leaves are falling off at an amazing rate. i dont know what kind of plant it is so im not sure what to do for it, im afraid its going to die. the plant is about 2 1/2 feet tall. it grows straight up and has lots of branching stems with 5-9 leaves on each stem. the leaves kind of look like ficus leaves but they are thicker, bright green with ocassional bursts of yellow. it also reminds me of an thinner more delicate green rubber tree. please help me i love this plant and would hate to see it die and as you can tell im not great with plants

So sorry about your daughter...

I'm not sure what plant you may have, maybe you have a picture? Or, you can take one of the leaves to your local florist or greenhouse for a positive id so you'll know the correct care.At first I thought it might be a "Pothos" but I think yours is too tall.

Rapid leaf loss can be caused by a few reasons. Cold draft, temperature, light and humidity change, (environmental change) Under-watering and possible over-watering. I don't think you have pest for such a great loss of leaves all at once, but it never hurts to check.

The best advice I can give for now is to give in bright indirect light, no direct sun. When the soil feels dry with your finger a couple inches down, water enough so it comes flowing out the drainage holes, you don't want to water again if it's already wet.
Dump out any excess from the saucer so it's not standing in water and don't fertilize until spring, when you see lots of new growth.

Good luck with your plant!
