I have recently been given a plant for my home. I don't know what it is. it is a tree with six broad leaves on the end of each branch. it is approxamently 4' tall

I think that what you are calling leaves and branches are leaflets of a single leaf. Have a look at a picture of Schefflera, the Queensland Umbrella tree. I think that that is what you have. Derek
