Hi,

I have 2 dracaena plants, one is a marginata; dragon tree, the other I'm not sure, but the leaves are long, slender, pointed at tips, and the stem is cane like; but not very tall at all. I've had the green leaved one { has no there colored stripes; it's just all green on leaves } for approx. 3 years and it's only 22 inches tall. Is this normal height considering its age ? There are 3 stems in my pot and its about 20 - 25 cm in diameter. Is this the right size to use ? I am now using " jobes plant food spikes 16 - 2 - 6 For lush ferns and palms. " I put in 6 spike / sticks according to the pot size. I want to know if these plant food sticks will help boost the growth of this plant, because it just does not seem to be growing much at all. And its leaves seem droopy, get brownish / yellow on tips, dry out and fall off too ? What might I be doing to cause this ? Under water / over watering, not enough or too much plant food / fertilizer ? Or do I need a specific type of food for it that I'm not using ? My other dracaena is the marginata version, with reddish purple stripes on the leaves edges, its about 23 inches tall, with very upright pokey leaves, seems healthy so far though. I put in the jobes plant food spikes as well, only 3 for this one as the pot is much smaller. What can I do to keep it healthy ? What types of fertilizers, plant food should I be using ? And how often should I water these dracaena's ? Some people say they love to be quite dry, while others say water really good once every week ? I live in Saskatchewan , Canada, in a basement apartment, but have large windows facing the north and west. I have the marginata in front of the north window, and the other dracaena { all green leaves } in front of my westerly kitchen window. Are these good spots for them both ? And please, if you can, tell me the proper full and common name for the all green leaved dracaena ? I've looked online but none really look like mine, maybe because most pic's shown are of quite tall, non droopy looking plants, whereas mine is shorter and not as healthy looking as any I've seen online. It would sure help to have the proper name for it and instructions for watering, where to place it { west / north, etc, } how often to fertilize and what kind, etc... for the all green one as well as the marginata variety. Sorry my questions are so long but any help you can give will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Tammy Remando, SASKATOON, SK. Canada.

Dracaena's are not fast growers and can take a while to get up there in height. They like bright indirect light with some sun. Water until it comes out the bottom and get rid of any excess when soil has had a chance to dry out first, ck weekly. The ideal pot size for any plant should only be an inch or two larger around than the plants root-ball.

Other than your Dracaena marginata (dragon tree) the all green one is probably Dracaena deremensis (janet Craig) which is the species that is solid green. D. deremensis Compacta looks more bird's nest, when taller, like a compact tower.

It's better not to fertilize in the winter months, that's when most plants slow down or stop growing and rest, wait until the spring and summer months.
Fertilizer sticks can burn if they are up against roots and since they can take a long time to break down, it's better to use a water soluable at half or less strength.
Time release fertilizer pellets may be used too. Use a reg balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 once a month.
The brown tips are probably from either using hard-water, over-watering, under-watered, poor drainage, low humidity or over-feeding.

thank you very much for your advice and info, about dracaena's.
i appreciate your help !
so, lol... can you try answering my question about dieffenbachia's ? I have one that was a cutting from a larger plant, hitting the roof, so a friend gave me a cutting from it.
my ques. is, i have it in my west window, and i get some sun,
in early mornings and evening, but not as much, if i lived in an upstairs apt. i live in basement apt.
it has 5 leaves growing on it now, but i wondered how much sun these plants like, and how much / often to water too.
and is there a plant food you can suggest for a dieffenbachia ?
thanks in advance for answering this question as well.
tammy
