I recently repotted my house plants with fresh new soil and yet the leaves are wilting and turning brown,is it possible that I may have watered them too much.

You could have watered too much, over-potted (pot too big)soil is not well draining enough.
The best time to re-pot most houseplant is in the spring, when they start to put out a flush of new growth. Many plants can be slow growing or dormant in the winter and don't like to be up-rooted. Being re-potted can be stressful in the spring, let alone winter.
Re-potting should only be done when the soil can no longer hold water for more than a couple to a few days, roots growing round and round each other inside the pot, then get bone dry before the week is out.If your plants must be re-potted, maybe you didn't like the pots, either get other pots the same size, or just go up one size larger and make sure the soil is well draining.
You may want to put your plants back into their original pots, or other same size pots or one size larger (if they really needed re-potting) until the spring or summer, getting rid of any excess soil that may be keeping the roots too wet which can cause suffocation, then rot.
