I have little white bugs in my plants' soil. I have sprayed them down with Ortho Diazinon Ultra Insect Spray, but I am still noticing the bugs. Someone had told me that they thought that it was Spider Mites. Do you have a suggestion as to how I can get rid of them and save my plants? Also, how long will it take to get rid of them?
Thanks, Fara

If they are whitish in color and move fast and jump when the soil is disturbed, they are probably "springtails" Spidermites are sucking pest and are found mainly on soft stems and leaves and you would see fine webbing in and around the leaves and damage to leaves.
Mild soapy water should kill a lot of them off, or at least keep their numbers down. You can also flush the pot with water over a bucket at watering time, water enough so it comes up over the rim and spills out over the sides of the pot spilling out many of the springtails, then replace any lost soil with sterilized soil. In spring you can also think about changing the soil completely.
Keep the soil dryer between waterings if possible since springtails live and eat decaying material in moist areas.
