dear plant care:

my fiance went out and bought a pineapple and i had remembered what someone had told me that if you put the top of the pineapple in water or the ground that it would root and grow into a plant and i want to make sure that it was true and i would like to know is how do i go about doing it? i have it in water right now but my question is how long will it take to root before i can put it in the ground because i really want a pineapple plant and grow my own pineapple.
