My Bird Nest Fern is dying! I need help! It was a gift from my Mother and I need to save it!
The tips of the leaves are dry and brittle. The soil is moist but not sitting in water. It gets sun from the west but is in the middle of the room.

It sounds like a few things could be wrong.
Dry tips on ferns can be caused by low humidity, mineral salt buildup in the soil and hot or cold drafts in the home.

Try adding a humidity tray which is an over sized dish at least 3/4 the size of the plants overall dimensions filled with pea gravel and water.
add water to the tray and place the fern pot in the middle making sure that its not siting in the the water but over it supported by the gravel waterlogged soil rapidly Leads to rot, so make sure to remove extra water if it comes over the gravel.Empty out the tray every two to three months and wash it and the gravel with a week bleach solution to remove accumulated salts and algae.(DON'T add bleach or algaecide directly to the tray when in use this will kill the plant!)
If the fern as been in the same pot for more than two years the media may be degraded and to compacted to facilitate good air circulation and water drainage, this leads to salt buildup. If this is the case you may want to repot it as active growth starts.
You can cut back badly damaged fronds at the crown this will encourage new growth and trim dry tips to clean up the appearance. also if possible try to get an easterly light source that gives at least six hours of even light because plants are most active in food production in early morning hours. late afternoon sun is often to intense and short to sustain proper health.
I hope this helps you out and if you have any more questions we will be here to help.
