Is it okay to put rocks on top of the soil in an indoor pot?, I have a indoor palm. I was doing this to see if it would help prevent gnats. Thank you

Hi Tony

Adding rocks is ok temporarily for top heavy plants but is not likely to help keep the gnats down. To control gnats let the soil dry almost completely between watering and use tobacco juice in a mix ratio of one table spoon per gallon once a month.

The rocks will add to soil compaction faster than if not used. compaction will lead to poor air exchange, poor drainage, root-rot and overall a faster decline of the plant. Also looking back at the first post adding rocks will act like a mulch and hold in moister. Gnats thrive and breed in moist soil.
