Hi all. Amateur indoor plant lover here. I'm in desperate need of help for my rubber tree that is growing too tall (about 3 feet tall) in an 8" pot (I think). I pruned it once last Summer and it stopped growing for a while, but started up again.

It's just growing too tall and eventually may topple over. I'm not sure whether to repot it or trim it. Any suggestions?

Rubber trees are part of the ficus family which are fast growers and very easy to trim. Just make sure you leave a leaf on the end of the stem. If you don't want a tall plant then keep trimming. The trunk of the plant will eventually get thicker if you keep topping it off and eventually you can grow it taller without it falling over. Your plant stopped growing because you trimmed it in the summer and the growing season is in the spring and early summer (probably why you see it growing again).

If you want a taller plant you can transplant it into a larger pot- just go up one size at a time so the roots aren't overwhelmed, if it's in a 8" pot go to a 10" pot. Make sure you break up the roots a little and for any ficus (well any plant actually) you want a pot with holes in the bottom for drainage. Rocks in the bottom of a pot are no substitute for holes because the water can still build up and get to the roots, but they're better than nothing.

If your plant starts to get top heavy and you don't want to trim it, buy some stakes at the garden store that are as tall as you want your plant to grow, stick them in the soil and tie the plant to the stakes.

If your plant keeps getting taller you must be taking good care of it, so that's a good thing!
