I recently planted some calla lillies of different varieties in descently drained soil and they all eventually 'melted', for lack of a better explanation. They stems easily pulled out of the root and the ends were 'jellied'. The root stank, and I'm certain there was some sort of rhizome rot. I've grown them before with success and can't be sure what the problem was. Was this disease or should I look for a problem in the soil drainage? It's a favorite flower of mine and they're fairly expensive so I would like to not repeat the same mistake. Thanks for any suggestions! M

That happened to me, too. I thought it was user error. I had never planted them before. If I can find an answer, I'll let you know.
Did you dig up the rhizomes yet? Maybe there's critters in the soil.

What kind of Calla Lilies? I have White Calla Lilies, and they are always wet.
