I have a Dracaena that I would like to try to take cuttings from. It has only a central stem (trunk) and no branches. Is there a way I can split the central stem and create new branches without killing the original? I could then use the branches to get cuttings to make a new plant or at least I think so.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I just got thru reading about this and can only say, "Yes". According to the article you make a cut with a clean knife/blade - into the stem and pass a toothpic thru it. Wrap moist moss/peat around the cut & toothpic and wrap it in clear plastic. Secure the plastic above and below the cut & moss, to hold the moisture in and in about three weeks you should have enough root to replant. Keep plant in bright indirect sunlight But.... don't cut yet! Why would you want to cut the top off unless it's lost most of it's leaves and you want to discard the base? (I think they said cut just beyond the cambium, which would be the bark or growth rings.)
