Can someone offer some advise? I have 3 houseplants a ficus, china doll and a philadendrom and have recently noticed a small type of fruit fly type of pest flying around the house and I was wondering if any of these plant can be the cause of the pests? I have no fruit in the house and I also noticed them around my gas fire place the last few days too I have had the problem for 2 months, I'm ready to just bomb the house!

At my workplace we were just given a lot of plants for our reception area... we are suddenly noticing lots of little flies as well. Not as big a body as a fruit fly, but bigger than a whitefly, plus they're black. We are pretty sure they came in with the rubber tree as they seemed to be coming from that plant's pot, but now they sit on the soil of other plants as well. I'd be curious what these little flies are too!

They are probably fungus gnats. They don't usually harm the plants (though they can be dangerous to seedlings and cuttings) but yes, they're highly annoying. They live in the soil of plants that are kept too wet - maybe you could try to water your plants less (although I'm not entirely sure that will help - I always keep my plants rather dry, and still have occasional problems with fungus gnats). And get some yellow sticky traps to catch the gnats.
