While locating water lines on a county road project last week I found these. They were growing along a shady sandy road side. http://s34.photobucket.com/albums/d118/gotrektheslayer/garden%20and%20home/Anyone know anything about them?

I agree that it's most likely a species of violet, but almost certainly not Viola odorata.

I used to have those grow on my lawn at my old house. They liked edge of the forest there... it wasn't far from a naturally formed small pond too... The ones at the edge of my old forest were thicker and fuller. They are very pretty little flowers.

They grow along the edge or the woods on a shady dirt road.
Are they native?
The flowers are a little bit smaller than a dime and have no smell. The stems are growing from a small bulb/tuber that looks like a tiny carrot but light green in color. Roots grow from it.

I think I have found it! Thanks for all the hints, they really help steer me in the right direction. Anyway, it appears to be either: marsh blue viloet "viola cucullata" http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=VICU&photoID=vicu_005_avp.tifor common blue violet "viola sororia" http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=VISO&photoID=viso_006_ahp.jpg

The bottom pic looks like the ones at my old place... which stands to reason that I've lived my whole life in Ontario Canada.

Yes, this is a form of violet. These exact plants are weeds in my yard and garden, and I think nothing of mowing them down, though I hate to remove them when in bloom.
