About a year ago, a friend gave me his 9 year old Yucca Palm as he was moving out of town. It did ok till last September, when it started to look like this...

I asked around and was told that maybe I was over watering it and that I should leave it unwatered for a month or so till the soil was completely dry. Then I should maybe give it a glass or so of water every two weeks.

Now it looks like this, as you can see, the three stalks are bent over and almost all the green is gone. No one I knew seemed to know what it was called, and so I couldn't really look it up on the net. Now I've learned it is called a Yucca Palm, and I see it probably needed more light than it was getting.

As you can see in the pics, it was cut off at some point or another and then painted, and then 3 stalks grew out of it. Now those three stalks are so weak, they have doubled over and I don't know what to do to save it. Can anyone help or is it just too late?

A new offshoot (baby) might grow from the roots or a new shoot might grow from the branches, ITS WAS DRIED OUT AND A LACK OF LIGHT by the looks of things. The soil looks dry as anything. the summer months the yucca should be watered again until the soil dries out a bit. during the winter water less then usual since the plant enters a sleeping phase. Lack of light was the main problem, bright south facing window with sunshine on the leaves should make it re-cooperate. but for now your main focus is too see if any sign of life may return, so keep the plant somewhat on the dry side, but dont keep it in the dark, place it in a BRIGHT room or in the brightest area possible inside your home with normal room temperatures, and mist the leaves occasionally if its resurrects

Sorry, but I'm afraid your Yucca cane (not a Palm) is dead. All of the stems have dessicated and are no longer able to function. The combination of inadequate light and irregular watering is what did it in. I suspect it was over watered initially and the roots rotted. Then it was under watered, which is not a cure for root rot.

If you would like to know what kind of care a Yucca cane requires, contact me at my email address below and request my article on Yucca canes.

take the one that is still really green and cut it off. Dip the freshly cut stock in rooting soil and pot in rich but well drained soil. Take it out of direct like till you see new growth then move it slowly into the correct light. I did this with one of mine a few years ago and I still have it growing. A whole lot shorter and compact but growing well all the same.

ops scrolled down further.. she is a gone'er. too late. She was a wee bit over watered. Looks like root rot got right in there.
