Hello: I am thinking of getting some African Violets and I am wondering about what kind of care they need such as sunlight, no sunlight, partial sunlight, watering, fertilizing, etc. I had two African Violets given to me a few years ago and they didn't last long. I live in southeastern Pennsylvania. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any comments/information.

Hi Vince,

African Violets will do really well with light above them. Possibly in a window environment however you will have to turn them in order to keep a well rounded plant. You never water from above, always under the foliage and I would use a mild solution of Peters ferterlizer at every feeding. When I say mild very pale blue. When the foliage becomes thick you can prune back just by sniping the leafs off,(underside of course) this will also promote new flowers to appear. Good Luck.

If African violets grow well, they will grow so much that they begin to choke themselves out. My grandmother recently told me that my great-grandmother was a raging success at African violets. The way she did it was to bust down the overgrown plant into its separate stem clusters and repot each cluster individually. I recently did that to one of mine that was growing out of control and each new cluster seems to be doing splendidly in its new home.

I have about 15 beautiful african violets. They bloom constantly no matter if I water them from the top or the bottom. I use to water from the bottom only...then thought when they grow wild and it rains...the rain comes from above right? hahahaha The one thing I did find is that I feed them once a month with a Peter's product and drainage is VERY important. I think that's the trick...and they are in a southeast window with a lot of morning light. I also break down the over grown plants and repot and have never had a problem.

Good luck
