hello, I have a very large corn plant, which has three plants with various sizes in the pot. My question is, the largest stalk is touching the ceiling in my house, how do i trim and how often do trim the plant and maintain it's good looks? It's been driving me crazy , and i don't want to kill the plant . thanks for any advice you my give me, Barry

You can cut a dracaena ack as hard as you like with very little danger to it. If the roots are strong it will quickly push up one or more shoots from near the top of the stem. So, the best way yo do this with no loss of beauty is to cut the tallest stalk down so that it becomes the shortest - keep the proportions that you have now or establish a new ratio and as soon as the new shoot grows you will hardly tell that you made the cut. When the next tallest gets too big, you can cut that, and so on for ever. And, by the way, the pieces that you cut off wil root if you stick the lower end an inch or two into a free-draining mix and baby them for a while. Derel

I have a corn plant in my home that I bought 17 months ago. It is in a good spot by a window and looks very healthy. Yesterday I discovered a 14-inch shoot with what looks like small pods of blooms up and down this shoot. Also, this long shoot is sticky. I have had corn plants before, but have never had one that had a "bloom" on it. The long shoot is growing out of the plant near the top and is on the back of the plant, so was sort of hidden. Is this a "bloom"? Or what is it? It looks odd.

Doris,
My mom has a dark green leaced corn plant that has something similar. She says it has bloomed before, but this time it has little clusters of hard grape-shaped berries. The stalk is sticky. If you find out anything, we'd love to know.

i have corn plant that was near a window that was drafty during the fall. the plant has a white powder growing on the leaves. it may be an insect, please reply back, colin

hi. did you ever trim your corn plant? i have the same problem you described, and just started looking for an answer today.
i'd like to cut the stalk way down, but am hesitant to do so because i fear it'll hurt the plant.
also, i wonder if mine is just overgrown and too big for the pot it's been in for, like, 15-20 years.
any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Peter, please read the first answer in this string. You can cut the plant as hard as you like - the base part will grow back and all the bits that you cut off will root. But please check the dozens of answers that have been given to this question in the "Search" section.
They can stay in a pot for a long time, and if you are daring you can knock it carefully out of the pot and slice a lor of the roots off (one side or the bottom). Put it back on a bed of good soil in the same size pot, and also topdress with an inch or so. You can go on for ever this way. derek

My corn plant gets a dark spot (with a yellow margin) on the leaf that then spreads and gets bigger. Most appear on the margin of the leaves but sometimes it happens in the middle. What am I doing wrong?

I noticed my plant having the same weird looking sticky shoot today. I have had this plant for over 10 years and have never seen this before. Did you find any answers?

All of these things growing out, and the stickiness, are to do with flowering or fruit forming. This too shall pass . . . Derek

I have a corn plant that is bout 15 yrs old...in it's tenth year it bloomed and oh, how fragrant...like Derek said...this too, unfortunately, shall pass!
