You may be overwatering..avocado plants like to dry out between waterings. Not entirely dry out but I would say about 2/3 of the pot should be dry before watering again. They also cannot stand the cold, they will die. Keep it out of direct sun, they do well in bright but indirect light, the direct sun will also make the leaves turn brown.
Hope this helps:)

I live in North Alabama, close to the TN border, we have mild, but sometimes cold winters and very hot summers, sometimes mostly dry and hot. Will the Avocado tree grow in this climate? We put a seed in a flower pot in the house and it has grown to about 2 ft tall and about as big around as a pencil, the stalk is bare, but has several leaves close to the top, is this normal?Any suggestions about where to go from here? Thanks in advance for any advice you might have. RRosen
