I have had my spider plant for approx 2 months now, each time I water it, Some the leaves turn brown in the center of the leaf. The tips are not brown, but the center of the leaves turn brown( the white stripe). The first time I watered it I used tap water. I watered it again two weeks later with purified water. Then another two week later, I used rain water. Each time I watered the plant, some, not all of the leaves turned brown. The plant sits by a window and gets bright but not direct sun light. I have not fertilized the plant yet. The strange thing about it, is that the plant is FULL of babies, and they look extremely healthy. As a matter of fact, the entire plant looks healthy, with the exception of the leaves that have turned brown.

Any suggestions on what the problem or resolution might be?

Thank you for your help.

I think that somehow, perhaps in the nursery, the soil in the basket/pot has accumulated fluoride - the stuff that goes into water to protect teeth. If you soil has become more acid with time, the fluoride has become soluble and is getting into the plant where it causes these brownings. Try adding a little lime to the container to raise the pH and see if that helps, or give the pot a very thorough leaching to get the fluoride out. Derek

Derek,

I am not sure that I understand this process of leaching. It seems that leaching is flushing the soil with water but isn't that the same as overwatering the plant? What's the difference?
