My mother pasted away and I have heredited her house plant the only one I don't know how to take care of and is in sad shape is a palm tree looking house plant. I don't know what it is so I don't know how to save it and I need to save it. If you want I will e-mail a picture of it to you. I know it need to be replanted because I think it may be root bound. It is in the same plastic container, she bought it from loews. If I get a reply I will attach a picture.

Dracaenas are often mistaken for palms because they have trunks that look like outdoor royal palms. All palms have fronds (some kind of fringe on the end) and Dracaenas have leaves. Do a google image search to find out what kind of plant it is. Dracaenas like indirect light (they will burn in 5 minutes in strong sun) and not a lot of water, good drainage is very important so they are often planted in lava rock. They can also live a very long time in the same container and don't mind being root bound. It's amazing to me that people's first instinct is to transplant instead of checking light and water first. The right light and regular watering (indoors usually once a week or less!) in the right amount are the most important things for a plant.

If you want to know if your plant needs water stick your fingers deep in the soil, if it's dry water it, if it's wet give it a few days and check again.
