I had a plant, thought it to be in the "Dieffenbachia" family, that one afternoon my daughter got some of the liquid drops from the leaves into her mouth and it caused her vocal chords to be somewhat paryllized for about 2 hours, she litterly could not talk. Can you tell me what plant this was?

Thank you!

Scientific Name Dieffenbachia spp. Family "Araceae" Commonly known as "Dieffenbachia dumbcane"
The sap of the Dieffenbachia is poisonous. A small amount in the mouth can cause burning and swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat thus causeing difficulty in speaking and swallowing, as well as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can also occur. Skin irritation too if exposed to cell sap.

Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling and keep your children and pets FAR away from not only this plant, but all plants.Any plant has the potential to cause some sort of reaction.
