Hi there,
Throughout the years, I've had cycles of buying palms (I don't know the actual types) and then watching them slowly die off. They last about a year for me, but I have to keep cutting their branches off (again, not sure of the term), as they dry up. I've tried to do better: more water/less water, more sun/less sun... to no avail.

Here are pictures of my latest purchase:

I live in Chicago, so it cannot be kept outdoors year-round. The temperature in my condo is always between 74-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, I do have the pot on wheels... in case it's a good idea to move it near my windows during the day.

So... can anyone please tell me roughly how often I should water it? How much water? Do I need to move it into the sunlight by day?

Thanks so much for any help... looking forward to keeping this guy happy and alive.

The plant is a Majesty Palm. This plant prefers medium light, which means keep the plant in filtered sunlight, usually within 5 to 8 feet of a window, but never in direct sunlight.

Watering of the Majesty Palm is crucial. The plant must have proper drainage set up. Do not allow the roots to sit in water. On the other end, do not allow the plant to dry out completely in between waterings either. This palm also prefers a slightly higher humidity level, so a daily misting will add plenty of beauty to your plant.

If the foliage tips begin turning brown, you are probably under watering the plant. Try watering it more often. On the other hand, if the foliage tips begin turning yellow, you may be over watering it.

Hi JustMe,
So, based on the "medium light" requirement, it appears that my Majesty Palm is in a good place... roughly 10 feet from my windows. Correct?

Also, misting is new to me. Do I literally just mist water on to the palms from a water gun-type diffuser? Is this done daily?

And as far as the watering, thank you for the color tips! I shiyuld strive to keep the soil moist, correct?

Thank you again,
Berklie

The light requirements sounds good. Especially during the winter when the air is more drier, I would mist the plant daily. You can use a water bottle or any other way you want to spray a fine mist of water on it and keep the soil moist but not standing.
