Yes, it should be alive! That's an American Larch or Tamarack (Scientific name: Larix laricina) turned into a bonsai that is, a miniature tree. You can buy a ready-made bonsai which is very expensive. Or make your own!

unless you want to spend A LOT of time caring for your plant, don't get a bonsai. especially if you want to keep it inside. get yourself a money tree or lucky bamboo if you want something Asian looking, they are inexpensive and relatively easy to take care of.
if you don't even know what the plant is, chances are you'll probably kill it if you buy one.
