I have a floral design business and have some plant interior design customers who do plant maitenance contracts with our company. I'm looking for the culprit to one of my schefflera arbicolas with pothos in the top of the pot. These are standards, and very healthy looking, yet the pothos has died in the pot and I see tiny flies who fly when I come near to water the plant. The twin to this plant is doing quite well, and the pothos is very healthy. Any clues?

Possibly fungus gnats, which I just recently posted about here. Maybe the plant was kept too wet - pothos can easily be killed by overwatering. Make sure the plant really needs water before you give it any.

Agreed. Fungas Gnats by over watering for sure. Usually what I like to do with my plants after I had my house over-run by them is I like to give my plant whatever soil they need or are in and the last 1/2 inch of soil I use Cactus soil because it is sand and it dries quickly. Fungas gnats love the wet and moisture and it has helped a lot! Only water your potho when it is thirsty :) Remember that it is always better to underwater than overwater.
