I have a plant that my Best Friend bought for me as a birthday present. It is a tropical looking plant long leaves and a big red bloom right up out of the middle of it. I have a picture but dont know how to add it on here. If you know how to add the pict please instruct me.

Sounds like a bromliad. Does the red "flower" look like the top of a pineapple?

Yes a little bit, its red and has layers its layered like a pineapple but red and gets bigger as it goes up into a big flower like bloom. I was told that the leaves are like cups and they drink from where they connect to the stem. That the dirt shouldnt be watered but the stem but its dying on me. Last night the stem on the flower fell over and I got to looking around the leaves and it is molded around it. It had broken off so I cut the bloom off hoping it will grow back.
